There will be some ceremonies and temple festival (odalan) in Bali area for the year of 2009 and 2010. If you want to visit some of them, you should wear traditional Balinese ceremonial clothing.

18th First day, preparation of the main ceremony at Bale Agung (the village hall) and Gaduh Temple accompanied by Selonding music orchestra.
19th Rituals at Pura Puseh (One of the village temple): followed with procession of effigies at Bale Agung, accompanied by "Rejang", the sacred dance and Selonding orchestra.
20th Rituals at Bale Agung (the village hall) accompanied by Rejang dance performance at 11.00 am, and at Bale Agung at 18.00 pm.
21st Meeting and rituals at Bale Agung followed by Rejang dance in casual dress performed at Bale Agung and Petemu Kelod (Meeting Hall) at 17.00 pm
22nd Last-day of rituals at Bale Agung, followed by procession of effigies back to Pure Puseh. Rejang dance is performed at Petemu Kelod at 11.00 am and at Bale Agung at 17.00 pm, accompanied by Selonding.
23rd "Abwang Peteng", literally means "Abwang dance performed in the afternoon", commenced with Rejang dance, performed by children and young girls in casual dress at Bale Agung at 16.00 pm, followed by Abwang dance and Selonding orchestra by maidens and bachelors of the village at 18.00 pm.
24th "Abwang Lemah", literally means "Abwang dance performed before noon", commenced with Rejang dance, performed by children and young girls in casual dress at 10.00 am. The main event is " Abwang "

18th "Galungan" holiday, the day believed as the victory day of "Dharma" (virtue) upon "Adharma" (evil). When the entire island is brightened with festives while "Penjor", the artistically, decorated bamboo pole, stuck at every house entrance adorning the both sides of village roads, symbolizing prosperity.

24th "Mekiis" or "Melasti" ceremony, the procession of Hindu followers carrying temple effigies to the beach for purification ceremony in welcoming "Nyepi", the Icaka New Year.

25th "Tawur Agung Kesanga" ceremony, great sacrificial ceremony offered to the underworld spirits for not disturbing human being's settlement (at 12.00 noon) followed by procession of "Ogoh-ogoh" (Huge doll symbolizing evil spirits) in the evening.

26th "Nyepi" holiday, the Icaka New Year 1931, the day of absolute silence for Hindu followers. When no activity is done, no fire is lit, no travelling anywhere and no amusement is held for the day and night.

27th "Med-medan", a traditional event, this event is held in connection with "Nyepi" the Icaka New Year, involving maidens and bachelors of the village as to strengthen brotherhood and understanding among the youth. Initiated with prayer at the local temple, the group members then hug one another, getting throughly wet under water sprouted by "banjar" member. It is indeed a cheerful moment for all, held at about 15.00 pm.

28th "Kuningan" holiday, the last day of Galungan celebration, believed to be the ascendant day of the ancestral holy spirits and the Deities to heaven after sojourning for several days on this material world. On this day, special offering consisted of yellow rice and speial dishes are offered while every compound and temple is decorated with ornaments made of young coconut leaves and flowers.

28th "Perang Jempana", as part of the temple's anniversary celebrations when two groups of the temple adherents carrying "Jempana" (temple effigy), collides one another as to indicate thet the ceremony has been processed properly at,

28th "Megarang Pipis" or "Mesuryak" (snatcing away the money), a special event when certain sum of money is collected from every family compound after holding a ritual, which money is then spread out on the village road snatched away by the crowd of people. It is believed that by supplying the anchestor holy spiritss with the money, the descendants will be rewarded with prosperity in return. It is usually held before noon.

Usaba Katiga

Date Events
1st First day of "Usaba Katiga", literally means ritual of the third month according to their own calendar. Fullmoon started with praying to Pura Gaduh and other Temples of the village, while carrying offerings made of traditional cookies, symbolizing mythological figures while Selonding orchestra cheers the atmosphere.
3rd The rituals commenced with the procession when the bachelors of the village playing Selonding orchestra at Subak Daha at 17.00 pm, followed by Abwang, performed at Subak Daha at 18.00 pm, and ended up by a procession when the vilagers playing with "Bale Ganjur" orchestra around the village.

Usaba Kapat

Date Events
1st Ritual of the fourth month, filled up with full moon ceremony and ritual held at Pura Dalem Pengastulan started from May 2nd until May 3rd. This temple is related to Pura Dalem Pengastulan in Bedahulu village, Gianyar regency.

Usaba Kelima / Sambah

The biggest cultural event throughout the year, a whole month celebrations, with details of the programs arranged : from May 21st until June 20th.

19th "Mamiut", a ritual held at every temple on the village, asking for safety and success for the biggest ceremony to be held during 3 month time.
21st Meeting and rituals are held at Pura Puseh Sembangan, attended by the temple’s adherents, cheered up by Selonding orchestra.
25th "Mati Ombo Sanghyang", a special event where the Deities abide at Bale Agung during three days time. The event commenced with slaughtering a buffalo with sacred Kris at 12.00 pm, accompanied by Selonding orchestra, proceded by procession to Bale Agung at 17.00 pm.
28th Last day of "Mati Ombo Sanghyang", when the Deities return in procession to Pura Raja Purana at 18.00 pm, while the ancient-swing is set up, cheered with Selonding orchestra.
30th A group of maidens collect holy water to public-bathing place, while the others pray at Pura Batu Keben and Pura Telaga. The ancient swing is purificated, blessed and then tried while Selonding orchestra cheers the atmosphere. This event then followed by a special ceremony for boys who officially accepted as "calon teruna" (candidates for bachelor of the village)
31st Second day of collecting holy water while the men attending a meeting. This event then followed by swinging together on the ancient swing.

13th "Bali Art Festival" (31st), opening ceremony commenced with cultural procession offered typically by each regency in Bali. After the main ceremony officially opened by the President of the Republic Indonesia / Minister, the procession will be proceeding to the ART CENTRE in Denpasar, where exhibitions and display of handycrafts, paintings, jewelries, garment products and other products are held, while various kind of performing arts are on stage every day and night, up to July 11th 2009.

Tenganan Pegringsingan, Karangasem regency (June 2009)

Date Events
1st "Mulan Saat", a special event, started with women’s activities, all dressed up in their finest and spesific traditional dress at 09.00 am, the main ceremony start at 13.00 pm, accompanied by Abwang dance performance at Bale Agung at midnight (12.00 am), ended up with Selonding group playing orchestra around the village.
2nd "Mulan Daha", a special event for the maidens only, with Abwang dance performance in front of Petemu Kaja (north meeting hall), Petemu Tengah (center), and Kelod (south) at 18.00 pm, while Selonding orchestra played by the bachelors marching around the village at 20.00 pm.
4th "Ngelawad", krama desa truna (the bachelors) of Temu Kelod and "Jero Pasek" pray and present ngelawad offerings at the puras : Pura Puseh Sambangan, Pura Petung and Batan Cagi.

Symbolic "Mekare" without actual fighting at Bale Agung, while Gambang music cheers up the atmosphere.

"Muran Desa", a special event held once in three years time, for the village as a whole consists of a series of rituals like the purification and the sacrificial ceremonies focused at Bale Agung, started from 16.00 pm, till late at night with Selonding orchestra cheering up the atmosphere, attended by all village – members in their finest traditional dress.

5th "Maling-malingan", a special event ("maling" means "the thief"), when two young men representing their respective group steal some meat available at Bale Agung. When they two finally captured by the villagers after being chased a couple of time, then dressed up with old banana-leaves-clothes, flowers, cow’s bell as their necklace, etc. and then carried along the village roads (to show that no forgiveness for criminals). This funny and cheerful event finally ended up with Abwang dance performed by the maidens at Petemu. "Mekare-kare" (duel between group of young men, each armed with two pieces of thorny pandanous leaved and pleated rattan as the armour), held at the Bale Agung at 16.00 pm.

"Mabwang Kala" (exorcizing evil spirit), a special event started with Abwang dance performance in front of Petemu (block of residence) followed with moving around the Petemu and ended up with chanting holy hymnes together at 20.00 pm. Symbolical "Mekare-kare" held at the Bale Agung at 16.00 pm.

"Muran Truna" (a special event for bachelors) held once in three years time, consists of various activities done by bachelors of the village with main program : selecting a maiden to be their respective partner in attending the series of ceremony all, day long.

8th Symbolical "Mekare-kare" held at the Petemu Kelod at 16.00 pm followed by maidens and little girls in complete traditional dress swinging on the old spinning chair (ancient swing) at 18.00 pm, ended up with praying at Pura Banjar.
9th "Mekare-kare" held at the Petemu Kaja around noon , while the maidens go praying to temples of the village at around 16.00 pm.
10th "Mekare-kare" held at the Petemu Tengah / Pekrama, proceded with procession around the village while playing music orchestra, Rejang and Abwang dance. "Mekare-kare" welcome anybody or visitors to participate in with stressing on the dancing characteristic, nobody win or loose, held at 11.00 am. Wound got during the duel can be easily healed with traditional medicines. The event will be followed by series of rituals and chanting hymns, sacred performance of Rejang and Kris dance at 16.00 pm. The entire event is ended up with Abwang dance performance and ritual at Subak Daha at 21.00 pm.
11th Prayer held at Pura Banjar with Rejang dance performance and Selonding orchestra at 06.00 am. Pig roasting followed by Abwang dance are held at Subak Daha participated in by bachelors and maidens of the village at 21.00 pm.
20th "Ngayah", the closing ceremony of Usaba Sambah, attended by the villagers as a whole according to their respective social function in the community of the Tenganan pegringsingan village.

11th Ritual called "Mesanggah Jumu" held at every house entrance asking for safety, at early in the morning, followed by meeting at Bale Agung, attended by musician group of Selonding, young men leader, and Saye Penyarikan (member of the Penyarikan social function in the village).

"MUHU-MUHU", second event of Usaba Kepitu, started with ritual in front of every house entrance at early in the morning, followed by ceremony and meeting at Bale Agung up to afternoon.

The series of ritual ended with exorcizing underworld spirits away from the village-area, done by women, bachelors and children by striking the village's wooden-bell, throwing stones, etc., lasting till night.

19th "MESANGGAH GEDEBONG" as the first of "Usaba Kolu" (ritual of the eight month), when every family sets up a shrine made of banana-stem decorated with young-coconut-leaves ornaments in front of which a ritual conducted by the bachelor or maiden of the family, held before attending to the ceremony at Pura Gaduh and meeting at Bale Agung at 14.00 pm
21st "MESABATAN BONGKOT" (throwing "bongkot" / lump banana's stem to one another). Second part of Usaba Kolu rituals commenced with the bachelor's meeting at Bali petemu followed by procession around the village and when the group of bachelors meet, they throw one another with a lump of "bongkot", at 16.00 pm. The event ended up with the maidens chanting holy hymne at Subak Daha at 17.00 pm, cheered by Selonding orcehstra.

29th Full moon ceremony and the last day of "Mesabatan Bongkot" / Usaba Kolu, cheered by Selonding orchestra at 17.00 pm.

"Pemendakan" (welcoming) procession for the Deities to Sakenan temple, from some main temples in Denpasar and Sanur, held in the afternoon.

"Megarang Pipis" or "Mesuryak" literally means snatcing away the money, a special event when certain sum of money is collected from every family compound after holding a ritual, and then spread out on the village road snatched away by the crowd of people. It is believed that by supplying the anchestor holy spirits with the money, the descendants will be rewarded with prosperity in return. It is usually held before noon.

20th Main ceremony held at Pura Jero when the whole temple adherents go praying to the temple in their finest traditional dress while Gambang orchestra cheers the atmosphere at 17.00 pm
21st Last ritual held at Pura Jero ended with procession of Deities back to Subak Pemaksan (the agricultural Temple) at 18.00 pm, followed by special event held for the elderly people of the village.

  • It is not possible to list any of human's life-cycle ceremonies such as cremation of fixeddate since it should be adjusted to the Balinese own calendar under high priest's considerations.
